Benefits of Writing in a Prayer Journal

Benefits of Writing in a Prayer Journal

Kaylin Askin

Writing in a prayer journal can strengthen your faith, deepen your relationship with God and renew your mind. A prayer journal isn't just words on pages; it is a spiritual place of rest, power and surrender in God's presence. This is why keeping a prayer journal is good for you in your faith journey:

1. It reminds you of God's faithfulness.

One thing we should never forget to do in prayer is to document answered prayers. It's so easy to get caught up in petitioning and pleading all the time, we fail to realize how God has already come through for us. But when you make a point of writing it down, it reminds you that God is faithful, kind and He will never forsake us.

God's answers to our prayers don't always look like what we expect. Write it down anyway--even if it doesn't make sense now!

I love Psalm 103:2 and I recite it in my head every time I catch myself doubting or forgetting God's character in difficult times. It goes like this:

"Bless the Lord, O my soul, and do not forget all His benefits..."

David pleads with his soul to never forget God's goodness. We should do the same.

Our personalised prayer journals include pages dedicated to document how God has come through for you in your life. We designed them specifically for this purpose--so that you never forget His benefits. We also included space for you to take note of the date of your prayer and the date God answered so that you'd be amazed at His perfect timing.

2. You experience more peace & less worry.

When you write in a prayer journal daily, you get out of your head and start resting in God. Your mind, soul and heart feels safe and reassured in His presence even when life is chaos. Philippians 4:6 says that the peace of God will guard our hearts and minds when we pray, make our requests known to Him and give thanks.

Writing in a prayer journal is grounding as it helps you focus less on your circumstances and more on God. The more you pray, the more you lean on Him over your own understanding and the more you trust Him in every situation.

Our guided prayer journals include daily prompts to present your requests to God, prayer requests for others as well as freely pour out what is on your heart. This can bring you that peace that surpasses all understanding.

3. It builds and maintains an intimate relationship with God.

Prayer journals can be spiritually transforming for anyone who is seeking a personal relationship with Jesus for the first time or for those who want to deepen their existing connection with Jesus.

Writing in a prayer journal means you spend time with God every day, you engage in natural conversation with Him as your Heavenly Father, Friend and Helper, and you train your heart to trust Him on a much more intimate level. You get to know His heart and His character. It's very sacred and personal.

A prayer journal can also help you break down the walls around your heart and let God in. The more I write to God in my journal, the more open, surrendered and honest I am with Him.

Like any relationship, it requires pursuit and effort from both parties. Keeping a prayer journal helps you stay in dependency on God and in relationship with Him.

4. It helps create healthier habits and routines.

Have you ever heard someone say they're having their "quiet time" ? This refers to an allocated time in your day where you intentionally and privately meet with God to pray, read the Word and just sit with Him. It can be done in the morning to start your day or at night before bed or both or whenever you can in the day--there is no "correct" way to do it. What matters is that you are giving God your unhurried time and undivided attention daily.

Every morning before I do anything else, I aim to reach for my Bible and my prayer journal first. I write down my prayers and I start my day with God's wisdom, peace and direction. Or when I've had a heavy day, I grab my prayer journal and Bible, and I talk to God so I can wind down, regulate my emotions and let it go.

5. It teaches you to practise gratitude.

When we pray, it's easy to develop a "me, me, me" attitude. God, this is what I'm going through, this is what I need from you, this is what I ask of you...

We must not forget to say, "Thank you Jesus!!!"

Which is why we created a prayer journal that has a daily block to list what you are thankful for. This will help you draw closer to God and be steadfast in your faith as you notice more and more that there is so much to be grateful for.
